The Christian Approach to Academics

As our name implies, our philosophy of education begins with the biblical understanding that children are created in the image of God. We believe all people are made like God in their ability to reason, to choose, and to create. Our task is to teach children so that they can understand what is true, choose what is good, and appreciate and create what is beautiful.

We believe that this task can only be accomplished when students recognize God as the creator of all that exists and as the source of all truth. Thus we approach every part of education and life with this in mind. Our entire curriculum is centered on Christ. We teach students to understand His truth as it is revealed to us in both the natural world and in Scripture.

As Christians we believe that man’s basic problem is not ignorance, but self-centeredness. Education cannot “save” people, but it can open their eyes to the the one who can truly save them: Jesus Christ.

We acknowledge that each child is of infinite worth, having been lovingly created by God. We also know that he or she is still a child whose judgments, decisions, and opinions often fall short of wisdom, and while his or her ideas should be respected, they should not be regarded as having equal weight as those of mature adults. God has ordained that parents and other godly adults, carefully chosen by parents, should lead children into wisdom and maturity.

Moreover, we know that every individual is personally fallen and therefore inclined to be self-centered and sinful. Because of this, it is every teacher's job to encourage and demand right behavior, and to punish wrong behavior and attitudes when appropriate.

Finally, we believe that parents bear the primary responsibility for their children's education. Therefore, The Imago School offers itself as a supportive agency which continually affirms the family's work of rearing children to know and honor God. Because we seek to complement the training being done in the home, parental involvement by reinforcing the academic and behavioral lessons learned at school greatly enhances the effectiveness of our entire program.
